Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure indicated to correct dermatochalasis and herniation of orbital fat affecting the upper and/or lower eyelids. The procedure improves both functional concerns (such as visual field obstruction) and aesthetic appearance by restoring a more youthful eyelid contour.

Procedure Details

  • Performed under local anaesthesia with or without conscious sedation
  • Incisions are placed within the natural upper eyelid crease or subciliary/transconjunctival approach for lower eyelids
  • Excess skin, fat, and, if required, muscle are excised or repositioned
  • Procedure duration: 60–90 minutes
  • Scarring is minimal and well concealed

Postoperative Recovery

  • 0–3 days: Expected periorbital swelling and ecchymosis, peaking at 48 hours
  • 7 days: Suture removal if non-absorbable sutures are used
  • 10–14 days: Resolution of most bruising and swelling; return to work
  • 4–6 weeks: Final aesthetic outcome becomes evident as tissue healing completes

Postoperative Care

  • Avoid cicular manipulation or pressure
  • Use prescribed ophthalmic drops or ointments as directed
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 2 weeks
  • Sun protection advised; sunglasses recommended during healing
